Cloud storage is one of the many ways technology has changed the world as we know it. In terms of enterprise businesses, cloud storage has led to the ability to store more data and to scale up at a faster rate, without having to invest in expensive servers and a place to house them. For businesses with the largest data needs, cloud storage doesn’t quite describe the ability to grow with increased business. Hyperscale is the new term for the capability to expand services to millions of users.

Since Covid-19 quarantine began, several businesses and business types have taken full advantage of the new hyperscale model: Netflix for streaming movies; Zoom for business and personal meetings; Amazon for movies, music and shipping products straight to the homes of the people in quarantine.

Although currently hyperscale applies most to the giants of the tech world, all enterprise businesses with any amount of technology use are gaining from this new model, which allows these tech giants to provide resources to customers and users for pennies. It’s the reason you can add unlimited business email accounts using G Suite or Outlook without having to purchase an extra server to do it. It’s the reason Zoom, Webex and Microsoft Teams haven’t crashed for good during the increased virtual meeting traffic over the last several months. It’s the reason that scaling from this point moving forward can be as easy as clicking a few buttons instead of needing to invest in more hardware.

Although currently there are only 24 companies across the world that are considered “hyperscalers,” with data centers large enough to handle an infinite number of new users and their data, the rest of the enterprise business community is already benefitting from these tech giants investing in the hyperscale model. Chances are, even if you weren’t already familiar with the term, your business has been taking advantage of a hyperscale data center through the many service providers you already use.
