There’s a lot of news related to enterprise businesses in the fourth quarter of 2020. Here are some highlights that are worth knowing about.
The Permanent Move to Remote Work
Microsoft is letting more employees work from home permanently. This is part of a larger trend started by the forced coronavirus quarantines and is affecting businesses across the board. Businesses—enterprise businesses included—have discovered that employees are able to be just as productive from home. The move is negatively affecting commercial real estate as companies downsize their offices.
IBM Splits
IBM has announced that it plans to separate its managed infrastructure services it gained both its name and its fame for. IBM’s new CEO, Arvind Krishna, plans to focus more solidly on cloud services, which have been gaining in both popularity and revenue for the tech giant. Both sides of the splitting business will continue to support enterprise organizations.
Recommended Big Changes for Big Tech
The House Judiciary Staff published a report on Big Tech: Amazon, Google, Facebook and Apple. Their subcommittee looked at several issues related to these large conglomerates, including their ability to monopolize their respective markets and the issues that have arisen with privacy and false information. Although at this point the findings are only recommendations, the suggestions could eventually be turned into laws that would not only limit the power of these large tech firms, but could make more room for competition from smaller enterprise businesses. A large part of this change could come in the form of interoperability: forcing these large companies to better support apps and other software that will operate with their platforms.
