In July 2021, Verizon announced the expansion of their enterprise solutions to include drones and robotics with their new Robotics Business Technology (RBT) arm. RBT will be comprised of a team developing command automation and robot control for Verizon’s 5G network; Skyward, Verizon’s drone management company; and incubed IT, a newly-acquired company that develops software for autonomous mobile robots.

RBT is part of a new business incubation initiative for the U.S. cell service provider. Its focus will be on integrating 5G and mobile edge compute (MEC) technologies into the management and use of robotics for enterprise, used both aerially and on the ground.

“Our talented team of roboticists will leverage the power of Verizon’s network, paired with the sophistication of next-generation software, to orchestrate and unify robotic experiences,” said Elise Neel, Verizon’s VP of New Business Incubation. “This work will help deliver on the promise of making the fourth industrial revolution a reality.”

Verizon is set to help enterprise businesses develop or grow their ability to leverage artificial intelligence and robotics for better manufacturing, construction, logistics monitoring, and customer service support. Robotics can help gather and organize information, ensure an infrastructure stays healthy and productive, and automate tasks, thereby freeing up employees for more intricate tasks better performed by people.

By building robotics management into their new 5G network and the related enterprise-level solutions already in progress, Verizon is working to position itself as an essential service provider for businesses and organizations across the U.S.

“By integrating these fleets with one operational platform, and leveraging Verizon’s advanced connectivity solutions, businesses can speed up time to insight, increase automation of their operations and deliver greater value,” said Mariah Scott, Head of Robotics Business Technology.
